Lessons and Carols
You are invited to join the community at United Theological Seminary for their
annual service of Lessons and Carols on Tuesday, December
19, at 11:35 AM. The service is adapted from a Festival of
Lessons and Carols of Kings
College Chapel, Cambridge, and includes traditional readings
and music. This adaptation has been part of the worship life
at United
for over 20 years. The King’s Festival used as a model a
service that had been instituted in the 19th century at Truro
Cathedral – a
service that drew on ancient sources. The tradition of such
festivals brought from England to this country has remained
a central part of the
Advent celebration in North America.

George Family Foundation Establishes Scholarships for
George
Fellows
This
spring, the interests and commitments of United Theological
Seminary and the George Family Foundation coincided to
produce a promising new program: United Theological Seminary’s
initiative to attract young adult students and Penny
and Bill George’s dedication to strengthening
the church and its leadership found common ground in the
George Family Foundation’s establishment of three
George Fellowships at United.
George
Fellows will be selected for their outstanding potential
as future church leaders and will receive full tuition
scholarships for the entire three years of their seminary
education. In addition, the Fellows will have the opportunity
to work with Jim Gertmenian and the Plymouth Center for
Progressive Christianity, assisting with programming of
nationally prominent speakers sponsored by the Center and
with a summer conference for outstanding seminary students.
United
is delighted and grateful to have the support of the George
Family Foundation in attracting excellent students for
ministry.
“These
scholarships enable United to compete for the outstanding
individuals so crucial to the future of our churches. They
afford very deserving students the benefit of the exceptional
educational experience that United offers,” said Sandy
Casmey, director of admissions.
We
look forward to welcoming the George Fellows in the fall. 5/30/06
- New Certificate and Concentrations Added
The faculty has added a new Certificate in Leadership toward
Racial Justice, as well as concentrations in Leadership
toward Racial Justice in the M.Div., M.A., and D.Min.
degrees. This certificate and these concentrations become
available
beginning with the 2006-2007 academic year. The first impact
of this in the seminary’s course offerings is seen
in the spring 2007 term when the initial required course
for the certificate and concentrations, TR331 Antiracism
Dialogue Theory and Practice, will be offered for the first
time.
The
program goals of the certificate and concentrations are:
- To
give students an understanding of the dynamics of racism
and white privilege, especially in their systemic and institutional
manifestations;
- To
give students knowledge of the experience and religious
traditions of at least two communities of
color;
- To
enable and motivate students to be effective agents of
change for the elimination of racism in church
and
society;
- To
prepare students to facilitate Antiracism Study-Dialogue
Circles as one form of activity leading
toward racial
justice.
The
course requirements for the Certificate and the M.Div.
and M.A. concentrations are as follows:
- TR331
Antiracism Dialogue, Theory, and Practice
- three
electives
selected from a list defined by the Educational
Policy & Evaluation Committee
(including courses, for example, in African American experience and theology,
Native American experience and theology, as well as immersion trips to
Two Thirds World countries, and suitable
offerings at Consortium schools)
- CL540
-- Practicum in Antiracism Dialogue (prerequisites:
TR331, two
of the three electives required for the certificate)
The
course requirements for the D.Min. concentration are as
follows:
- TR331
Antiracism Dialogue, Theory, and Practice
- two
electives
a. selected from a list defined by the Educational Policy & Evaluation
Committee (including courses, for example, in African American experience and
theology, Native American experience and theology, as well as immersion trips
to Two Thirds World countries, and suitable offerings at Consortium schools);
b. students may use comparable courses at other ATS seminaries to meet
this requirement under the terms of the D.Min. elective policy and subject
to
the approval of the Director of the D.Min. Program and their faculty advisor.
- CL540
-- Practicum in Antiracism Dialogue (prerequisites: TR331, the two electives
required for the concentration)
